KUSHABHAU THAKRE INTER-STATE BUS TERMINAL (I.S.B.T.) @ BHOPAL

Though the government has ordered the BDA (Bhopal Development Authority) to hand over the ISBT (Inter-State Bus Terminal) project to the Municipal Corporation, named as "Kushabhau Thakre Inter-state Bus terminal (I.S.B.T)" and work is being carried out at an impressive speed, it will still take another two months for inter-state operations to start. Currently, only 13 buses travel outside the state; 11 of them go to Rajasthan while one each goes to Nagpur and Amravati. All the 13 buses belong to Rajasthan and Maharashtra Transport Corporation. The ISBT project was intended to fill this gap, but it seems both the public and the government have to wait a bit longer to witness better inter-state bus services.
The ISBT building started on November 1, 2010.
According to reports, the state eventually plans to put around 400 buses under the project.
There is still some time before Bhopal could get its own Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT). The project which is going to start under Public Private Partnership (PPP) will take one more year to start an ISBT in the city. Search of an operator under PPP will start only after Municipal Corporation gets the ownership rights of ISBT; however Municipal Corporation claims that as soon as they get the rights, ISBT will be started.
This must be noted that most of the work for ISBT had been finished in March-April itself. Since then, its inaugural has been awaited by both public and the government itself. According to the Municipal Corporation, 50 buses will be made operational foe the service, these buses will connect Bhopal to Hoshangabad, Nagpur, and Raisen.

BHOPAL HAAT

Bhopal Haat, a marketing place for rural products, has become a happy hunting ground. Bhopal Haat was created two years back under a central government scheme with an investment of Rs 3.20 crore to market rural products manufactured by self-help groups (SHGs).

After looking at the super success of Delhi Haat, Madhya Pradesh is putting all efforts to make Bhopal Haat a shopper’s paradise, by showcasing best handicraft and handloom products made by local artisans.

The State is famous for its terracotta items, silver jewellary, colourful rugs, dolls and garments made from cotton and silk. Along with that leather, furniture, marble products and other decorative items are also renowned nationwide.
Apart from local craftsmen, items produced by Self Help Groups(SHGs), of other states like Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Orissa are also ready to display their attractive handmade artifacts here. Jharcraft, Jharkhand Government’s initiative for promoting its handicraft items, is planning to send exclusive silk sarees and terracotta artifacts to Bhopal Haat, to get new sale orders from visitors.

The aim of Bhopal Haat is to encourage and provide the necessary help to craftsmen in marketing their products.

SANCHI STUPA @ BHOPAL

Sanchi is a small town on the outskirts of Bhopal, situated around 46 km from the capital city. The town comes under the district of Vidisha.  It is more of a village than a town. Sanchi is a religious place with historical and archaeological significance. Sanchi is known for its Stupas, monasteries, temples and pillars dating from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century AD The most famous of these monuments, the Sanchi Stupa 1, was originally built by the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka. The place is related to Buddhism but not directly to the life of Buddha. It is more related to Ashoka than to Buddha. Ashoka built the first Stupa and put up many pillars here. The crown of famous Ashoka pillars, with four lions standing back to back, has been adopted as the national emblem of India.

Although the city is world known for these Buddhist sites, Sanchi does not have great significance or consequence in Buddhist history, though it is now considered as a pilgrimage town due to the monasteries that are present here. Emperor Ashoka came here and married the daughter of a local merchant. Sanchi thus became his center and he carried out the construction of many buildings. The Ashoka Pillar and the Great Sanchi stupa are the most exquisite works of that time. The Stupas were the earliest forms of Buddhist architecture that were the inspiration for many other buildings.
Along with the historical buildings, don't forget to visit the archaeological museum. It showcases the renowned image of four lions that once sat atop the Ashoka Pillar. Although a visit to the town is comfortable throughout the year, the best time is between the months of October and March. Hotel accommodations are available in plenty.

Jataka Tales

Jataka tales as do Aesop's fables teach generosity and self-abnegation based on previous lives of the Buddha as Bodhisattvas. As a Bodhisattva he took births as man, animal or bird. It is believed that the Buddha accumulated virtue by good deeds he did as Bodhisattvas and had attained merit for achieving nirvana in his last birth when he was born as the prince Siddhartha.
