THE NAWAB'S OF BHOPAL

The Nawabs of Bhopal were the Muslim rulers of the princely state of Bhopal, now part of the modern state of Madhya Pradesh, in India. The last Nawab was Hamidullah Khan, who acceded his state to India in 1947. The Nawabs of Bhopal ruled the princely state – Bhopal before the Indian independence. During the medieval period and during the British rule in India, the Nawabs were the supreme authority of Bhopal.

Contrary to the popular notion, the most illustrious Bhopal Nawabs were women. According to historical findings, the first among the Nawabs of Bhopal was “Nawab Dost Muhammed Khan” - the man who rebuilt the city founded by Raja Bhoj.

The female Nawabs were also known as the Begums, their official title being Nawab Begum of Bhopal. The terms “Begum of Bhopal” may in theory also refer to the wives of male Nawabs of Bhopal; however, in practice such ladies are only rarely referred to by that title. The era of female Nawabs started with Begum Nawab Qudsia Begum. Born in 1801, she married Nawab Nazar Mohammed Khan in the year 1817. Qudsia Begum took the 'scepter' in her hand when her husband was killed in 1819. She proved herself as an able ruler and at the same time groomed her daughter Sikander. Nawab Sikander Jahan Begum succeeded Qudsia and kept the good work intact. She was a woman with strong will power. She was generous and kind hearted. Nawab Shah Jahan Begum was the next ruler. She was an intellectual woman and did not hesitate to protest against British highhandedness.

VIP ROAD, (RAJA BHOJ MARG), BHOPAL

"Statue of Raja Bhoj at VIP Road, Bhopal now known as Bhoj Marg."

Raja Bhoj, a king of the Parmar dynasty, was marked by the unveiling of 32 feet high gigantic statue of the ruler along the embankment of the Upper Lake, the lifeline of Bhopal. The 32-feet high statue which weighs seven tonnes is made up of gunmetal and bell metal and has incurred a cost of Rs. 27 lakhs. It took two months time to manufacture the statue. Its base is 12 feet and was installed on 10 feet high “Burj” (bastion) in the Upper Lake.

It may be mentioned here that the Madhya Pradesh State Government has dedicated 2011 to Raja Bhoj millennium year.

UPPER LAKE, (BADA TALAB), BHOPAL

Upper Lake, (Hindi: बड़ा तालाब), is the largest artificial lake in Asia. Which lies on the Western side of the capital city of Madhya Pradesh. This is one of the two water bodies present in Bhopal and was constructed by Raja Bhoj during 1005-1055. The king was also responsible for establishing the city of Bhopal and the lake still provides almost half the drinking water that is supplied to the city.

Upper Lake is situated on the west central part of Bhopal city and is surrounded by Van Vihar National Park on the south, human settlements on the east and north, and agriculture fields on the west. On Bada Talab, you can enjoy a variety of boat rides – motor, sail, and even the age-old paddle.

Bada Talaab was built by Raja Bhoj during his tenure as a king of Malwa (1005–1055). He established the city of Bhopal (also named after him, then as Bhojpal) to secure the eastern frontier of his kingdom. It has an area of 31 km², and drains a catchment or watershed of 361 km². The watershed of the Upper Lake is mostly rural, with some urbanized areas around its eastern end.

ABOUT BHOPAL

Bhopal (Hindi: भोपाल) is the capital city of one of the states in India called Madhya-Pradesh and the administrative headquarters of Bhopal District and Bhopal Division. The city was the capital of the former Bhopal state. Bhopal is also known as the Lake City (or City of Lakes) for its various natural as well as artificial lakes and is one of the greenest cities in India.

When speaking about Bhopal, a glance on the history of the old city will enlighten anyone a lot. It became 'the capital in 1956', after India's freedom in 1947.

The origin of the city dates back to the eleventh century when Raja Bhoj founded the ‘Bhojpal City’. However the Bhopal of today was built during the eighteenth century by ‘Dost Mohammed’.
